Liberal Studies Student Clubs

The Student Council

Liberal Studies Student Council is the voice of the students within Liberal Studies.  They work closely with the Liberal Studies administration in help making sure that Liberal Studies students' needs are being addressed.  The Student Council Executive Board is comprised of ten elected Liberal Studies students; six of whom are sophomores and four of whom are freshmen.  The Council organizes and plans free activities throughout the academic year.  There are traditional events that are planned each year; ice skating in Central Park and a ski trip to Hunter Mountain.  The Council plans a variety of events such as Broadway Shows, Movie Nights, Free Dinners, the End-of-the-Year Celebration, among others. The Council instituted the Liberal Studies Students' Excellence in Teaching Award in which Liberal Studies students can nominate a professor and five Liberal Studies faculty members will be chosen from the nominations, one being the recipient and four being the finalists.  The Council also plays an active role in welcoming new students every fall to the Washington Square campus. Economics Club

The Economics Club introduces LS students to current economic events.  Discussions cover current economic policies in the U.S. and the world, including the theories underlying these policies. The club also organizes field trips to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the New York Mercantile Exchange. Every semester a leading economist is invited to talk to club members. Advisor: Ascension Mejorado am78@nyu.edu

LSP Productions

Founded by Liberal Studies students pursuing film majors, LS Film Productions provides an opportunity for students interested in filmmaking to collaborate with peers on a film written, directed and produced by students. Advisor: Pamela Jefferson prm213@nyu.edu

LS Theatre

The LS Theatre is a theatrical company that performs full-length plays each semester that are fully staged and fully costumed. Past productions have included works by Euripides, Wilde, Shakespeare, Sartre, Aristophanes, Moliere, Brecht and, Wilder, as well as works written and adapted especially for LS Players. Crew positions involve areas such as choreography, lighting, sound, scenic design, costuming, makeup, stage manager, and special effects technicians. At the end of the year, the casts and crews of the productions host the Baffin Awards for outstanding acting and technical achievement. Advisor: Robert Jeske rj1@nyu.edu

Intramural Sports

Whether beginners or advanced players, all LS students are eligible to participate in intramural sports. Sports include men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, volleyball, quikball, tennis, and touch football, as well as coed bowling and softball. Students play against teams from other NYU colleges. Knitting Club

The knitting club offers new and experienced knitters a chance to stitch with other students. Members are given knitting instruction and information about fiber sources near NYU. Advisor: Philip Kain philip.kain@nyu.edu

PlusUltra Robotics Coalition

The goal of the Robotics Club is to endow machines with autonomous intelligence. The main thrust of our group is more abstract than simply assembling electronic tinker toys; we strive to understand what it means to think intelligently in real environments, and construct robots to test our ideas.  In this way we hope to achieve both the educational goal of enriching our understanding of the mind, as well as the practical goal of creating machines that can perform useful tasks. The Politics Club

LS’s political discussion group meets bi-weekly to discuss the latest in politics and features guest speakers. A forum filled with searching questions, strong opinions, and friendly arguments. Advisor: J. Ward Regan jwr4@nyu.edu

LESTER keeps students abreast of Happenings, Gastronomy, Best Kept Secrets. LESTER seeks wordsmiths and cultural omnivores as contributors. Liberal Studies students can contribute reviews on music, movies, performances, shopping, and local events for the Liberal Studies community.
