Frequently Asked Questions
I want to earn a B.A. in GLS and major in French. Language is a key part of the degree, and every student will study a language other than English to advanced level. Language fluency will be further honed during the immersion year abroad. In addition, students will be able to complete any language minor that is available at NYU.
I am an entering LS freshman and I plan to apply to the GLS B.A. Can I major in English? No. GLS students pursue a course of study in Global Liberal Studies and earn an NYU Bachelor of Arts degree in Global Liberal Studies. The GLS BA is interdisciplinary, and students will take courses that cover literature, history, art, science and other areas. Students will develop a concentration in a particular area of global studies in close consultation with a faculty advisor.
I’m spending freshman year in London. Do I still spend my junior year engaged in international study? Yes. All GLS students, including those who begin their GLS freshman year abroad, will spend the junior year at an international site. The junior experience is the keystone of the GLS degree: students are immersed in the history and contemporary culture of the site through course work, language study, and experiential learning. For those who have been at an international site as freshmen, the junior year may be at a different site or the same site, depending on the student’s individual plans and academic goals.
Will tuition for the new GLS B.A. be the same? Yes, tuition will be no more than it is for the current Liberal Studies two-year program or for the other NYU undergraduate schools.
I am a current Liberal Studies freshman. Will I be able to apply to the GLS BA program? Yes. There will be an opportunity for qualified LS freshmen to apply to the GLS BA program for their sophomore year. Applications for internal transfer to GLS are available via the NYU Office of Undergraduate Admissions in January of the freshman year.
I’m an LS freshman in Florence. Will I be able to apply to the new B.A.? Yes. LS students who complete the freshman year at an international site will have the same opportunity to apply to the new B.A. as Liberal Studies students on the Square.
I am a Liberal Studies sophomore and I’m interested in switching to the new B.A. in Global Liberal Studies. Can I apply too? No. Unfortunately, current sophomores will not be able to earn a B.A. in Global Liberal Studies. They will transition as juniors to the school to which they originally applied.
I’m a new GLS freshman and I’m thinking about a pre-health (pre-med) concentration. Will I be able to complete the pre-health concentration? Technically, the pre-health concentration is available to any undergraduate. But because there are limited elective opportunities in the GLS B.A., and because students must spend the junior year away from the Square, it will be very difficult for GLS candidates to complete the pre-health concentration in four years. For those who want to earn a B.A. from Liberal Studies and also apply to medical school, a much better option would be to complete the GLS degree and then to enroll in a post-baccalaureate pre-health program.
